SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - The three men arrested in the RCMP drug operation known as Project Germane were in court on Feb. 24.

Ali Ashraf, 22, Adrian Graves, 28 and Mohammed Jomha, 31, who will be tried separately, are all scheduled to make their choice on March 24 of trial by judge alone or by judge and jury.

Ashraf, Graves and Jomha each face three counts of trafficking and one count of possession of property obtained by a crime.

The drug bust on Nov. 24 resulted in the seizure of two pounds of crack cocaine, eight pounds of marijuana, a .45-calibre semi-automatic handgun and a large amount of cash.

Ashraf also faces one charge of possession and Graves also faces two motor vehicle offences.

Power Corp to resolve fisheries matter

The NWT Power Corporation is close to resolving a legal matter regarding a charge under the Fisheries Act, territorial court was told on Feb. 24.

"This matter is in the process of being resolved," said Crown prosecutor Shelley Tkatch.

She said prosecutor John Cliffe is drafting an agreed statement of facts.

Tkatch asked for an adjournment to March 31, which was granted.

The NWT Power Corp. was charged with violating the Fisheries Act after a breach at a dike located at the Snare Forks hydro facility. The company was charged with depositing sediment in water frequented by fish on June 15, 2006.

Man breaks down former girlfriend's door

A Yellowknife man who kicked in a door in an attempt to get to a former girlfriend was given nine months probation last week.

The 41-year-old man, who has no past criminal record, pleaded guilty to mischief after he kicked an apartment door so hard he broke through a dead bolt and chain in the early hours of Nov. 16, 2008.

Crown prosecutor Shelley Tkatch said RCMP arrived on the scene and found the man inside the apartment. She said it was an aggravating factor that "this mischief is in the context of a spousal relationship."

Tkatch said there was $1,111.30 in damage to the door.

The man was given nine months' probation, must complete 50 hours of community service and must pay the YWCA, to whom the apartment belongs, for the cost of damages he caused.
