SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - Two Yellowknife men charged with drug trafficking in connection with a police drug raid at the Yellowknife airport in December 2008, had their cases adjourned for two weeks on Tuesday.

Brad Baker and Robert Howie are each charged with two counts of drug trafficking, and Howie is also facing one count of property obtained through crime.

The two men were set to speak to their charges this week but dates for both men were pushed back to April 7.

Crown prosecutor Glen Boyd said there is a large volume of information to deal with.

Howie was present in court for the hearing, but Baker was not.

According to RCMP, approximately 1 kg of cocaine was seized during a drug raid on the airport's Navigator restaurant on Dec. 24.

$800 fine for missing court

A 21-year-old Yellowknife man was fined $800 Tuesday for failing to appear in territorial court.

The man, facing an assault causing bodily harm charge from November 2008, had appeared in court twice in December, but failed to appear on Jan. 27 to confirm a trial date.

The man, who has no previous criminal record, was given two months to pay the fine by Judge Bernadette Schmaltz.

"You can't just ignore these things and hope they go away," she said. "They will catch up with you."

Sobering consequences

A man in his early 20s sped through the court process Tuesday, pleading guilty to operating a motor vehicle while over the legal alcohol limit. He was fined $1,500 plus a $225 surcharge and prohibited from driving for 15 months.

The charge stemmed from a Jan. 31 incident when he was stopped by RCMP after parking at a residence on Range Lake Road.

Two breathalyzer tests were taken later, with one test reading two-and-a-half times the legal limit.

"You drive at that level, you are going to kill somebody," said Judge Bernadette Schmaltz before sentencing.
