Liquid fashion and breakbeats
By Daron Letts Northern News Services Published Thursday, March 26, 2009
Look unveiled her latest collection of Northern Couture at the Snow Castle last weekend.
Look's refined and sophisticated collection, called New Shadows and New Lights, included a series of large but elegant necklaces, bracelets and earrings. The pieces incorporate silver, antler and bone. "It's some of my favourite work to date," Look said. Look polished the antler and bone to a high gloss finish, bringing out natural deep purples, greys, browns and ivory shades of white. "I've always been one to highlight what some consider to be imperfections in leather and bone," she said of the hidden hues unleashed in her organic media. In a few pieces, the silver chains seem to flow down the body like mercury. In other pieces, chunks of chain were looped through pierced bone, solidly integrating the contrasting materials. Cait Caines, Naya Henderson and Rachel MacNeill modeled Look's designs. As the women paced and posed along the icy catwalk, their movements were backed by a lively theme spun by Bush League. The DJ trio played Eastern Jam, a track by veteran British drum and bass duo, Chase and Status. Following the fashion show, Bush League launched into a techno set with a few progressive house sounds spliced in. "We thought we'd try out that sound for the night and it worked out pretty well," said DJ Clarkitect. Bush League animated the busy space until 11 p.m. Visiting DJ Joshua James followed with a two-hour set of world sounds, break beaks, reggae and psychedelic melodies. Bush League closed the evening around 1 a.m. with another short set of funky breaks and electrohouse tunes. Bush League will provide the soundtrack for two dance events in May, including the soon-to-be-announced launch party for the love and sex issue of the Do It Up zine, issue three. Look's jewelry is available through Gallery of the Midnight Sun, Sasha's Jewelry and Northern Images. |
