GAMETI/RAE LAKES - A man has been detained with suspicion of having 'material evidence' regarding the death of a Gameti woman.

Last Friday at approximately 8:15 a.m. RCMP in Gameti were advised of the death of a 31-year-old woman.

The investigation is in the preliminary stages, but indications suggest the death was not of natural causes.

"We're looking at it as suspicious," Sgt. Cliff McKay said. "She's a 31-year-old woman that under normal circumstances wouldn't die of natural causes."

A man in his 30s was taken into custody late Friday afternoon by the RCMP in Gameti and will be transported to Yellowknife as soon as possible.

McKay said the man was closely associated to the deceased whose name has not been released.

The RCMP were looking for the man all day Friday in connection with the woman's death.

Prior to the search he was seen that morning in the community of Gameti with a rifle in his hand, police said.

There was also an outstanding warrant for his arrest regarding a separate matter.

The cause of the woman's death has not been released.
