SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - Vaginas ought to be celebrated, as anyone who has one or has met one knows. The underrated organ will be honoured in town this weekend.

Various local women from a variety of backgrounds are presenting three performances of the Vagina Monologues at the Top Knight.

The famous play by Eve Ensler has toured the world, featuring celebrities like Alanis Morisette, Sandra Oh, Queen Latifah, Salma Heyek and former Yellowknife resident Margot Kidder since debuting in New York in 1996.

"The play breaks the silence plaguing any meaningful discussion of female sexuality," said veteran Sir John student-actor Diana Pelova.

Pelova is one of 11 actors sharing the stage this weekend.

"The play is funny for everybody and uncomfortable for some," said organizer Rachel MacNeill. "It's a blast. It's humour everyone can relate to."

The fast-paced, quick-witted and intimate script tramples taboos while broaching serious social and political issues without losing sight of its fundamental purpose – to entertain and engage the audience.

Funds raised from the project will be donated to the Centre for Northern Families and Alison McAteer House, with a small sum going to support rape victims of the civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The adult shows run at 8:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. An all-ages show begins at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets are available at CD Plus.
