SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - With the selection of Oscar nominees vying for top honours at this year's Academy Awards, some film buffs might find themselves saying "I could write better movies than that."

Now is their chance.

Screenwriters Sarah Kalnay and her fiance Charles Watson of Pumpkinmuffin Productions are leading an eight-week workshop series for novice screenwriters next month.

The classes will offer practical suggestions for generating ideas for plot, character and theme as well as introducing the art of visual storytelling and script basics.

"It's meant as an introduction for people without experience but it's not limited to novices," Watson said.

"By the end of the course we hope students will have developed a treatment for their screenplay," Kalnay added. "I think that there's a lot of untapped talent in the North and we'd like to see more people in the North getting engaged in the film industry."

The two writers plan to develop a follow up course series on scriptwriting for next fall. They are currently collaborating on an historical thriller set in the North.

Spaces for the screenwriting course are limited. To register contact the City of Yellowknife.
