Fort Smith council approves sno-cross site

THEBACHA/FORT SMITH - The fifth annual Fort Smith Sno-Cross Races will be going ahead as usual this year unless the issue ends up in court.

At its Jan. 27 meeting, town council agreed by consensus to allow the races to take place at the usual venue in March.

"Council unanimously supported the event to take place in the existing location," said Mayor Peter Martselos.

The town had previously contacted the Fort Smith Snowmobile Club, which sponsors the event, and asked it to find an alternate venue because of ongoing concerns about the usual site.

Ken Hudson, who lives next to the large field where the races are held near the Slave River lookout, said he has raised concerns about the site for years and has been promised the event would be moved. Hudson said he may seek a court injunction to halt the races this year.

Blaine Walterhouse, the president of the snowmobile club, said changes will be made this year to address Hudson's concerns.

Martselos said council supports events like the sno-cross race.

The races are set for March 28 and 29.
