Residential school commission vacant
Northern News Services Published Monday, February 2, 2009
On Friday, commissioners Claudette Dumont-Smith and Jane Morley indicated they will step aside from their roles effective June 1. Justice Harry LaForme resigned back in October, citing flaws in the commission's organizational structure. Steps have begun to recruit three new members to the commission, which is responsible for documenting cases of abuse that occurred in government-run residential schools. In the absence of an Inuk commissioner, a number of high-profile Nunavummiut had stepped forward over the past year to advocate for Inuit representation on the commission. "We would feel a lot more comfortable with a commissioner that can understand and communicate in Inuktitut," residential school survivor Paul Quassa said last August.
