SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - A Yellowknife couple was arrested last week after police found 20 marijuana plants and what they described as a large amount of cultivated pot in the residence where the couple resided, according to the RCMP.

Police sat there were at the Northland Trailer Court home on Thursday for a child welfare investigation when they discovered the drug operation.

RCMP Const. Stephanie Ward said police could not comment on whether the couple's two small children were in the home at the time.

"It was a full-day investigation," said Ward. "We were initially called to help a child welfare case."

Officers on the scene discovered the drugs and then obtained a search warrant in order to seize the marijuana, according to police. Ward said the total number of grams in the residence hadn't been calculated as of Tuesday.

A 40-year-old man and his 34-year-old wife were arrested and are facing criminal charges, but none had been laid as of Tuesday afternoon.

Both had been released from police custody as of Friday and are scheduled to appear in court on April 7.
