SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - The two Yellowknife men charged with trafficking after to a drug bust at the Yellowknife airport's Navigator restaurant appeared in court on Tuesday.

Brad Baker, 36, and co-accused Robert Howie, 58, are both charged with two counts of trafficking. Howie is also charged with one count of possession of property obtained by a crime.

"These are very serious matters," said Crown prosecutor Glen Boyd.

He said information pertaining to the case is "fairly large and fairly expansive."

Defence attorney Stephen Shabala requested the matter be moved to March 24, which was granted by justice of the peace Kevin Dennis, who was presiding over Territorial Court.

Police say approximately 1,016 grams of cocaine were seized during the drug raid on Dec. 24 at the Navigator restaurant.

Charges could change: police

A woman charged with aggravated assault and a breach of court conditions was not in court on Tuesday when her case was discussed, but a lawyer did appear on her behalf.

Alice Joyce Nitsiza, 43, is currently residing in Behchoko, according to defence attorney Tom Boyd. Nitsiza was scheduled to choose trial by judge or by judge and jury on the aggravated charge assault. She was also supposed to decide whether the case would be heard in Territorial Court or Supreme Court.

Crown prosecutor Janice Walsh asked the matter be scheduled for April 14. The 84-year-old woman Nitsiza is accused of assaulting on Jan. 15 in a Ndilo residence died in hospital on Feb. 8. Nothing was mentioned in court of a possible change to the charges against Nitsiza, but the matter came up during the municipal services committee meeting at city hall on Monday.

"We're waiting for further evidence to determine if that charge will be changed to manslaughter," RCMP Sgt. Mike Brandford told city council during the meeting.

Man awaiting psychiatric assessment in jail

A man charged with sexual interference is waiting in jail for a bed to become available in Edmonton so that he can receive a psychiatric assessment. The man was charged in relation to an incident from April 28, 2008.

RCMP have "checked with the hospital. There is a wait list," said defence lawyer Tom Boyd. It was not made clear when room might be made available at the Alberta Hospital.

Justice of the peace Kevin Dennis scheduled a March 10 court date "for an update," said Boyd.
