Food to go

INUVIK - You've noticed the long lunchtime lineups of restless kids eager to get their hands on some KFC or Pizza Hut while the workers try desperately to meet the demand.

Beside them, bakers work furiously pumping out freshly-made pies and bread loaves of all kinds.

Cliff Stringer, NorthMart store manager, explains what we have here is a lean, mean food production machine.

In the past three weeks the food factory corner has gone through a major overhaul. The Quick Stop, which features the KFC and Pizza Hut production line, has been refitted with all new equipment complete with glossy signs bearing all the fast food classics.

The bakery has installed top of the line, energy-efficient ovens and coolers that produce a selection of baked and deli goods, including Chinese food and cabbage rolls. The bakery has just hired on one more hand to manage with the newfound efficiency.

"We're always looking to expand or to improve on our business," said Stringer.

Only in the last couple weeks has the new "Fun to Go" system been introduced, including a rainbow range of slushies featuring lime and cherry flavours, to name a few.

The more moderate beverage drinkers can help themselves to a hot or icy cold cappuccino selection or regular coffee.

"There's something here for everyone, and it's convenient for people who just want to serve themselves and go," said Stringer. "It should work out well for us."

Helping herself to her very own rainbow slushie, Toutuk Lester said she was impressed with the renovation job, especially with the decision to serve one of her favorite icy drinks.

"I like it a lot," she said.
