SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - An 81-year-old Ndilo woman who was attacked in her home last month died in hospital on Sunday. Marie Doctor was taken to Stanton Territorial Hospital on Jan. 15 after an intruder, who police said was unknown to her, attacked and seriously injured Doctor, according to RCMP

NWT chief coroner Cathy Menard said Doctor's body was sent to Edmonton on Monday and an autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday to determine cause of death.

As to whether or not Doctor died as a result of injuries sustained during the assault, Menard said, "Hopefully the post-mortem (autopsy) will help determine that."

She said there could be preliminary results released, but that would only be what the examiner sees with the naked eye.

The full results of the autopsy are expected to take about three to four months.

"The coroner's office is assisting the police because of the circumstances," said Menard.

RCMP Const. Kathy Law said police, "can't release any details at all of the investigation," which she said is ongoing.

Alice Nitsiza, 43, has been charged in relation to the incident. She's facing one count of aggravated assault and one count of failure to comply with a probation order.

During a court appearance on Jan. 19, Crown prosecutor Danielle Vaillancourt said the victim of the attack had been disfigured. As of Tuesday the charge of aggravated assault had not changed.
