SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - A man and woman out celebrating the new year were assaulted by three men after stopping to get money from the downtown TD bank machine, according to police.

After approaching the couple and starting a brief conversation at around 1 a.m. on Jan. 1, the three men assaulted the man, said RCMP. The woman received non life-threatening injuries when she attempted to stop the assault.

RCMP Const. Kathy Law would not give details of the injuries attained by either victim, but said "They didn't attend the hospital."

Law added police are not sure what triggered the assault.

"We don't have any indication of what it was. (There) was a conversation between the three individuals and the male. We don't have any indication of what prompted it," she said.

After the assault the three men reportedly left the scene and entered another establishment nearby.

The RCMP has turned to the public for help in identifying the attackers, and anyone who has information is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers.

The assailants are described as Caucasian and all are between the ages of 20 and 30. All three were reported to be wearing jeans and hooded sweatshirts.

"We have no suspects," said Law.

Police are reminding Yellowknifers to be aware of anyone coming in or out of bank entrances when they are using automated machines.

"Always be aware of your surroundings ... always be on guard," said Law.
