Town plans utilidor, library repairs for 2009

INUVIK - This year many construction projects may be finalized and repair work completed on old buildings in town, according to Mayor Derek Lindsay, who spoke with Inuvik Drum about projects for 2009.

Lindsay said the first thing town council is going to do is have its budget ready for the May 31 deadline.

"We passed our interim budget before Christmas," he said. "This is what we intend on spending for 2009."

Lindsay said the town delivered a copy of the budget to Municipal and Community Affairs before the year's end.

Once an audit is done on the town later this month, officials will know where to put their funding.

A stretch of utilidor on Bonnetplume Drive and Dolphin Street was to be replaced last summer.

The work was started by a new firm, but Lindsay said more work needs to be done once the snow has melted and the ground is soft enough to dig properly.

"There were some deficiencies in the utilidor project," he said.

He said details on the utilidor must be completed before the firm is paid for their work. Another aging utilidor slated for replacement connects houses on Tuma Drive.

That structure, said the mayor, needs repairs to its foundations.

"That utilidor is pretty well laying on the ground," he said.

"It looks like it's being supported by the connecting utilidettes."

The five-year contract with the paving firm has also expired.

"We haven't brought the contractor in for a contract renewal yet," said Lindsay.

"Once we know what our capital budget is, we'll look at it again. I hope we can do some more paving in town this year."

Repairing the roofs of the curling club and library are also on the agenda.

"The rec complex roof on the curling club side has a leak now," said Lindsay.

The leak is due to snow collecting on the roof and not being blown off by the wind.

"There is a copious amount of snow up there," he said. "We also have a mean crack in the roof of the library. It needs to be looked at right away."
