Touching show in Arviat

About 350 students from kindergarten to Grade 5 took part in the two performances. Grade 3 open program teacher Suzie Muckpah said both concerts attracted large crowds to the elementary school. She said the students had been practising for the concert for months. "Each teacher selected a song or a small play or skit for their class to do during the Christmas concert," said Muckpah. "Some of the classes had been practising since September to prepare for the show, with preparations really starting to get intense in November and early December. "This was the first year students from our school also MCed the show. "We usually have older students from the middle school MC our show, and a number of parents took the time to tell me it was nice to see elementary students to that job this year." Muckpah said while every class did a great job with their performances in the concert, Molly Kidlapik's Grade 3 class provided one of the main highlights in the show. She said Kidlapik's class has one deaf child, so Jody Pameolik interprets American sign language (ASL) for the student. "Jody (Pameolik) started preparing the ASL for the class performance in August. "The Grade 3 class performed Merciful God by Jim Felix while using sign language, and their efforts with the song really touched the crowd. "The people of Arviat are big fans of Jim Felix – who performed twice in our community during the past year – and Merciful God in one of the community's favourite songs. "I myself had tears in my eyes during their performance because it was all so moving." |
