Idol concert just idle rumour

A concert teaming pop punk icon Billy Idol with local blues trio Priscilla's Revenge would be a hot ticket in Yellowknife, but it's not happening.

Contrary to rumour and at least one media report, the rebel rocker is not scheduled to perform on March 8 at the Multiplex, said Garry Hubert of Wolfman Productions. The promoter did speak with Idol's management last year, but no deals were made and Hubert said he had no idea where the recent rumours came from.

The erroneous information circulated from a San Francisco-based website called Wolfgang's Vault.

Someone from a Billy Idol fan site posted the fictional concert date on Sept. 20 of last year. The fan site where the post originated opens with the headline "Latest news 2004."

The Wolfgang's Vault website further claims that on Jan. 20 Three Days Grace, Hedley, Hinder and State of Shock are playing a massive concert at the Multiplex. George Jones, Third Eye Blind and The Rankins are supposedly coming to town this year, too.

"None of those dates are booked," said Brian Kelln, program manager with the department of community services, adding the NWT Speed Skating Championship is scheduled for March 8 at the Multiplex.

"As of right now, Billy does not have any plans to tour in 2009," read an email to Yellowknifer from Idol's management team.

The Idol rumour spread through blogs and Facebook and by word of mouth during the holidays. Priscilla's Revenge opened for Trooper during that super group's visit to Yellowknife last fall.

Idol, who began his career in the 1970s with the band Generation X in the heyday of London's rowdy punk scene, released an album of Christmas music in 2006.
