Car chase ends in RCMP parking lot
Cara Loverock Northern News Services Published Friday, January 16, 2009
Police received a report of a stolen vehicle on Wednesday at around 6:45 p.m. At 1:35 a.m. Thursday morning RCMP saw the vehicle on 50 Avenue and a short pursuit followed when the driver refused to stop. A Fort Liard man, 26, was apprehended after the vehicle struck the fence in the RCMP detachment building parking lot. He tried to flee the scene on foot but was quickly caught by police. A female passenger, 19, was also arrested on the scene. "We have no injuries," said RCMP Const. Kathy Law. A white passenger van, she added, "was narrowly missed by the suspect's vehicle." She said police are asking for the driver of the van to come forward so that they can obtain a statement. Charges are pending against the man, said Law, including charges of impaired operation of a motor vehicle, driving while disqualified, failure to provide a breath sample, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by a crime, mischief and obstruction of a peace officer. The man is currently in custody at the Yellowknife RCMP detachment. Charges are also pending against the female passenger but "we have to investigate a bit further," said Law. The woman is currently facing charges but may not be pending the outcome of the investigation.
