Hay River in focus

HAY RIVER - Planning has begun on a digital picture-taking blitz of Hay River and the surrounding area.

All members of the community, plus Enterprise and the Hay River Reserve, will be invited to take photos on the March 6 to 8 weekend.

The photos will be collected and placed on the Internet as a weekend-in-time snapshot of Hay River and area.

"We're trying to build community here and focus on the positive, because there are a lot of positives in Hay River," said Nancy Makepeace, one of the organizers of the project being spearheaded by NWT Centennial Library.

Makepeace, a program librarian, said the photographs will capture a moment in time of the community.

"I think once people get the idea, they'll really like it," she said.

The project is similar to an endeavour on March 8, 1985, called "A Day in the Life of Hay River."

Those photos, which are contained in two large binders at NWT Centennial Library, feature a wide range of people and scenes, everything from a dentist at work to children at school to a view of downtown from the highrise.

Along with Makepeace, one of the main organizers of this year's project is retired teacher Bob White, who organized "A Day in the Life of Hay River" in 1985.

The first planning meeting for this year's project was held Jan. 7 at NWT Centennial Library.

Seven people attended the meeting, including Brian Lefebvre, a businessman and president of the Hay River Chamber of Commerce.

Lefebvre took many pictures for 1985's photo montage.

""I thought it was cool 24 years ago and I think it's a great idea today," he said.

Lefebvre said looking at the photos from 1985 brings back lots of memories.

No official designation has yet been decided for this year's project, but names such as "Hay Days" and "A Digital Day in the Life of Hay River" were discussed at the planning meeting.

Makepeace said organizers would welcome suggestions for a name from the public.

The next planning meeting will be held at the library beginning at 7 p.m. on Jan. 15.
