TUKTOYAKTUK - While everyone else seems to be in a rush nowadays, Samantha Adam, 19, is taking some time to ponder her future before rushing off to the next adventure.

The recent Tuktoyaktuk graduate said she knows she wants to pursue post secondary education but she still isn't sure what she wants to study.

"I'm hoping to get into college and do some upgrading. But I have to figure out what I want to do before I do all that," said Adam. "I want to go to college and if that takes me to university I'll do that too."

She said she knows she would like to attend school somewhere on the prairies. In her 19 years, Adam has lived in both Saskatchewan and Alberta, but her family kept returning to Tuk, the place where she was born. She said family is a big part of her life and one of the reasons she has returned over and over.

Adam said in her spare time she generally just hangs out with friends and family.

"In the winter I like Ski-Dooing a lot," she said.

Another year in Tuk is going to give her time to go to Husky Lakes at least one more time in the spring. Like so many Tuk residents, Adam looks forward to the annual spring trip when geese and fish are harvested. She said she especially enjoys fishing while out at the lakes.

"I think the largest I ever caught was 40 pounds."

Although she loves her hometown, Adam said she thinks once she moves South to work she will be looking to stay down there. That won't preclude a trip home every now and then, but "I think I want to move on," she said.

As a recent grad, Adam also had a message for students who are on the fence about whether or not they should finish high school.

"It's important to stay in school because if you want to get a good job you need an education," she said.

Adam said you risk missing out on some big opportunities down the road if you choose not to complete your high school.
