The coroner has identified the human remains that were found at the site of a residence fire in Iqaluit on Dec. 13. The identity of the young woman is being protected out of consideration for her family. Carolyn Sloan/NNSL photo

“Positive identification was made by the coroner into the identification of the young woman who was deceased in the fire, however, we’re not about to release a name due to the privacy of the family,” Sgt. Peter Pilgrim of the Iqaluit RCMP reported yesterday.

The woman's age was also not released.

The remains were found inside House 137B, which was engulfed by flames on the morning of Dec. 13..

Two people escaped the blaze, suffering only minor smoke inhalation. The inside lower level of the duplex unit was destroyed in the fire.

According to Nunavut’s Protection Services, the Fire Marshall’s Office has filed its report and handed it over to the Iqaluit RCMP. The report includes an investigation into the cause and location of the fire.

Pilgrim said that he has yet to receive the report, but added no charges will be laid in relation to the fire.
