Anyone going into the downtown post office to pick up or drop off parcels for the Christmas season may notice the 'cash only' signs inside the building.

A problem with the post office's debit machines means Yellowknifers trying to get out last minute gifts must have cash on hand.

Malcolm French, manager of media and public affairs for Canada Post, said the corporation is working to fix the problem as fast as possible.

"We've got the technicians on it," said French. "It's just one of those technology things that happens."

He said the post office should be able to take credit cards for amounts $60 or under. French said it is Canada Post's busiest time of the year and they apologize for the inconvenience it may be causing to customers.

"We're really sorry," he said. "We're hoping to get it fixed shortly," said French, adding he could not give a specific time of when the debit machines may be up and running again.

John Abbot, manager of the post office, said the debit machines have been a problem for "six or seven days."

He said the public has been "pretty understanding" of the situation and they've put up signs in the building to let people know.

He said Yellowknifers have the option of going to the second post office location inside Shoppers Drug Mart, which has not had debit machine problems and is accepting various forms of payment.
