SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - Police are warning Yellowknifers to beware of a con artist asking people in the downtown area for money so he can catch a flight.

The man is described as a well-dressed caucasian man with some facial hair, roughly five feet, 10 inches tall and between 35 and 40 years old.

Over the past few weeks he has used different identities and claims to be an employee for a local business.

RCMP Const. Kathy Law said the man doesn't seem to be singling out any certain type of person.

"It's random. It's just whoever happens to be there; that's what it appears to be," she said. "All of our reports are in the downtown core ... It's happened several times now."

The man also reportedly claims his bank card is stuck in the bank machine and he is in a rush to catch a flight.

He gives out phone numbers for work and a cell phone, neither of which are correct when dialled.

The man also sometimes signs an IOU to convince people to give him some money.

She said although people want to help those in need, Yellowknifers should be cautious.

"It's a case of buyer beware," said Law.

Anyone who believes they have been approached by this man should advise RCMP so police can get a better description of him.
