The Galaxy Quest sci-fi costume party at the curling club on Saturday was arguably the best space bash since the Bajoran celebration on the Cardassian-constructed Federation space station in Alpha Quadrant during episode 10 of the third season of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, star date 48441.6.

Julie Jackson, dressed as space babe Barbarella, and Therese Boullard, dressed as a martian disguised as a human from Mars Attacks, organized the dress-up event.

In past years, the friends coordinated parties themed after James Bond films, gender-blending and bending and the 1980s Dallas television series.

The annual social gatherings are intended to inject some colour and light-hearted humour into the dark dawn of winter, when Yellowknife begins to feel a bit like the frozen planet Hoth.

Dan Gillis arrived as Captain Kirk, post-fisticuffs, and Monique Robert came dressed as the extra terrestrial assassin Predator. Michele Culhane showed up as the campy third wheel in the dynamic duo, Bat Girl.

The glamorous alien attendees mingled amidst a kitschy sci-fi soundtrack and videos of Star Trek, Star Wars and other intergalactic classics.

Discussion topics ran the gamete from Utopia to Dystopia.
