AKLAVIK - Residents of Aklavik will be heading to the polls in early December to choose a new mayor and four town council members.

Charlie Furlong, William Billy Storr and Robert Buckle will all be vying for mayor in a by-election held to replace former mayor, Knute Hansen, who left town in the middle of October. The election winner will hold the mayor's position until December 2009.

Marry Ann Elanik, returning officer of the election, said nominations closed Nov. 3.

"The advanced poll is Dec. 1 and the election date in on the Dec. 8," said Elanik.

Residents will also be electing four new town councillors. Six community members are running for the four positions.

The community of Aklavik has eight town council positions in total. Elections are staggered and four new municipal council members are chosen every year. Council members hold their seats for a period of two years.

The six residents running for town council include Gordon Nixon, Richard Papik, Don Storr, Michael McLeod, Eugene Pascal and Neil Heron. Storr is the only councillor currently seeking re-election.

Current councillors staying on until 2009 are Eddie Greenland, Greg Wilson, Annie Buckle and Dave McLeod.

Evelyn Storr, Aklavik's senior administrative officer, said the number of nominations for council is typical of Aklavik elections, although it is more common to see only two mayoral candidates.

Storr, who is currently in her third year serving as the hamlet's SAO, said all three mayoral candidates have municipal experience.

"They have all been involved with municipal council and Charlie was the past mayor," she said.
