IQALUIT - A Hall Beach man who killed his common-law partner in 2003 has been sentenced to 13 years in a federal prison.

Silas Ammaklak previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of Susan Natar. He attacked her in a drunken rage on Sept. 17, 2003, and she died from her injuries five days later.

Ammaklak has spent the past five years in remand at the Baffin Correctional Centre, and as such was credited with 100 months of time served.

Sentencing arguments were heard earlier this month by Justice Robert Kilpatrick in Iqaluit, and his written judgement was released Friday.

Ammaklak was also handed an additional 30 months of jail time for assaulting a guard at the BCC.

He is prohibited from possessing firearms for 15 years, except while hunting.

He has also been forbidden to contact any members of Natar's family, and must submit to a DNA test.

"If you care at all about the life you have taken, you will now commit yourself to working on the issues that brought you here," Kilpatrick wrote
