SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - When a slick British magazine called Monacle profiled Yellowknife in a recent article it was another reminder that far-flung folks in the south have no clue what life in the North is like.

Professional photographer Pat Kane launched a new website earlier this month to more accurately document the exciting beauty of the North.

Kane clued in to the misconceptions about the North harboured by some in the south while shooting in Resolute Bay one winter. A Globe and Mail reporter picked up some of Kane's photos to illustrate an article on Arctic sovereignty.

"People in Toronto didn't even know there were photographers North of Edmonton," he said. "There are lots of photographers, writers, filmmakers and artists working up here. There's a talent pool up here that people don't know about. The website is just to let the world know that we are up here."

Kane's website displays remarkable aerial shots and landscapes, intimate portraits and a selection of photojournalism capturing special moments in the lives of Northerners.

His new website is online at www.patkanephotography.com.
