NUNAVUT - Nunavummiut will head to the polls yet again to elect a new crop of councillors and mayors.

Hamlet elections will be held Dec. 8 in most communities.

A number of Kivalliq municipalities are enjoying some increased interest in this particular election. In Baker Lake, 18 candidates are vying for four seats on council, including former MLA David Simailak.

Repulse Bay has 17 candidates for five seats, a number which returning officer Romeo Kopak said is unusually high.

While Kopak didn't hazard a guess as to what sparked the interest, he said there tends to be more names put forward in years where a mayoral position is also open.

"It's very great, there's so much interest, so many candidates for council," he said.
