BAKER LAKE - The hamlet of Baker Lake is in mourning following the accidental death of a 44-year-old woman earlier this month.

Alice Sevoga was travelling on the Dump Road in Baker Lake at about 11:30 p.m. on Oct. 17 when she lost control of the ATV she was driving and went off the road.

Baker RCMP attended the scene within five minutes of the accident being reported, and Sevoga was immediately transported to the local health centre where she was pronounced dead.

The Baker Lake Health Centre is only about a minute's drive from the scene of the accident

No helmet

Sevoga was the lone rider on the ATV at the time of the accident. Const. Jeff Henderson of the Baker Lake RCMP detachment said the rider's helmet and a high rate of speed played substantial roles in the fatal accident.

"We did find the woman's helmet at the scene of the accident, so she was either wearing it improperly or not at all," said Henderson.

"A witness's observation of the accident indicates she was travelling at a higher rate of speed when she lost control of her ATV."

Henderson said alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the accident.

He said friends and family members are dealing with the news of the accident as best they can.

"I spoke with a couple of family members of the victim and they were surprised and saddened, of course, by such an unfortunate accident."
