Five arrested for daytime break-ins
Northern News Services Published Friday, October 24, 2008
Const. Kathy Law confirmed five individuals have been arrested in relation to the string of daytime robberies. The arrests took place in August and September. All the individuals arrested are from Yellowknife, according to Law. "There wasn't just one area they were hitting. It was all over the city," Law said of the break-ins. Since the arrests, break-and-enters into residential homes has dropped significantly. In July there were approximately 25 break-ins reported; there were 46 in August and September combined. This month there have been only four reported break-ins. "So, it's come down a lot," said Law. The items taken during the robberies included art, but a wide range of goods were stolen from residences. On Sept. 9, police issued a notice stating that the recent rash of break-ins had been occurring mainly during the day. Investigators found the suspects had been approaching homes and knocking on the door to see if anyone was at home. According to the RCMP, when the door was answered the suspect or suspects would say they are going door-to-door offering their services as part of a small business. The suspects were unable to provide many details about their alleged business. Charges are pending on all five arrests. Those charges include break and enter, possession of stolen property and possession of break-in tools. |
