SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - Twice-convicted pedophile and former lawyer Charles McGee was charged with possession of child pornography last Wednesday, according to the RCMP.

McGee, 56, a long-time Yellowknife resident, was on a recognizance, meaning he was released from jail after a 2006 conviction and had to abide by court conditions. One of the conditions was that police were allowed to search his computer and Internet usage at any time.

RCMP laid charges of possession of child pornography and breach of recognizance as a result of a search of his personal computer.

RCMP Sgt. Larry O'Brien said Friday he could not comment on details of how the search was done, if McGee was brought into the police detachment or if RCMP officers went to his residence.

McGee was previously convicted in 2004 and given a two-year conditional sentence for molesting two girls in 1974.

He was convicted a second time in 2006 for sexually abusing an eight-year-old girl in the early 1980s. The June 2006 conviction was for indecent assault, a charge that no longer exists under the Criminal Code, and he was sentenced to nine months in jail.

The former civil attorney was suspended from practising law after his first conviction and was disbarred as of last month, according to the Law Society of Alberta.

The society's website posted a notice which stated "a Resignation Committee appointed by the Benchers of the Law Society of Alberta granted the application of Charles F. McGee to resign, pursuant to Section 61 of the Legal Profession Act, effective immediately. Mr. McGee is therefore disbarred."

The notice was dated Sept. 8, 2008.

McGee is set to appear in Yellowknife Territorial Court on Tuesday, Nov. 4. If convicted, he faces a maximum of two years in prison.
