Spookarama rescued by donations

The Lions Club was afraid it would not have the $6,000 to $8,000 needed to hold the event, but people in town have shown their support for the event. "It is a go," said Don Finnamore, president of the Lions Club in Yellowknife. The event, which takes place at the DND hangar, will include a DJ, prizes and free food for all the kids that come out. Spookarama has been held for more than 35 years and usually attracts 700 to 1,000 kids on Halloween night. The event will start at 7 p.m. and go until 11 p.m. Pizza Hut will be providing pizzas and Coca-Cola will offer beverages. Prizes given will include MP3 players and a trip for two to Edmonton with First Air as the grand prize. The Elks are again helping out with money and volunteers at the event. "It gives teenagers something to do because they are too old to go out trick or treating," said Roland Gagnon of the Elks Lodge. "The price is right." "It's going to be bigger and better," said Jeannie Rocher, a volunteer for the event. "It's a definite go. They are rounding up all kinds of stuff." Finnamore said they can always use more volunteers. "It would be good if we could get half a dozen or more at any particular time," said Finnamore. "If we get 20 to 30 chaperones that's good. That way we can do some sort of a rotation." |
