A month of awareness weeks
Lauren McKeon Northern News Services Published Wednesday, October 15, 2008
Friends Kourtney Williams and Kari Turcotte, at least, are two who do. Williams ran in the Oct. 5 Run for Our Lives event and Turcotte donated some money to the cause. But what about October as Stamp Collecting Month, Cyber Security Awareness Month or Chili Month? "That's a lot of weird celebrations," laughed Turcotte. It's also Women's History Month, Autism Awareness Month and Eye Health Month. Not to mention Oct. 23 is World Standards Day. Indeed, October is one crowded month. Take this week for instance. It is Citizenship Week, Wolf Awareness Week and National Science and Technology Week. Next week we have the zany and ever-fun National Infection Control Week, Small Business Week and Waste Reduction Week. "It's like 'everything week,'" said Williams. She's not far off from the truth. This month also features National Chemistry Week (this year's theme is "Having a Ball with Chemistry"), National Magic Week, Disarmament Week, World Breastfeeding Week, Family Violence Awareness Week and National Fire Prevention Week - to name but a few. Oh, and don't forget the first of the month: the International Day of Older Persons. How's a Yellowknifer to keep track of it all? Sometimes it helps if a group decides to opt out of their week, or, in the post office's case, their month. When asked if the downtown location would be doing anything special for Stamp Collecting Month, employee Cindy Prawdzik answered, "No, I'm not too sure." She wasn't aware it was Stamp Collecting Month at all, she added. And while Williams wouldn't have known there was more to October than breast cancer awareness, the multi-themed month is "kind of cool," she said. "You can eat a bunch of chili," she smiled. |
