PANNIQTUUQ/PANGNIRTUNG - Peter Evic, Pangnirtung's new recreation co-ordinator, was quite busy when Nunavut News/North contacted him on Wednesday.

"I'm just getting organized here," said Evic, who was moving into his new office. "I was just hired today. This morning."

Evic, who was born in the Cumberland Sound area and grew up in Pangnirtung, recently moved back to the community from Iqaluit, where he had lived for a couple years.

"This has been my home for all my life," he said. "So it's good to just be home"

Evic feels his experiences growing up in Pangnirtung have helped him understand the need for recreational opportunities for youth and the entire community.

"I would want to see more activities going on in our community," he said.

One of the first things Evic said he wants to do is to rebuild an outdoor rink.

"Since the indoor arena was built in 1989, they took down the outdoor rink boards and they were not put back in ever since," said Evic.

He said he wanted those old boards back because it is already cold enough outside to make ice.

"It's still too warm inside the arena (for ice)," he said.

Evic said not only would the outdoor rink help people brush up their skills for the upcoming hockey season but it would also be a place for those who don't have the money for organized hockey to get out and emulate their heroes.

"It used to be really useful for kids who couldn't afford to play inside the arena," said Evic.

"It will be nice to have those boards back," he said.

The arena presently sits where the old outdoor rink used to be, so Evic said there may be a problem finding a new spot for the rink.

"If you know Pang, it's pretty hard to find a new location," he said, "but we could probably find a place."

Evic said he had other ideas but there's nothing concrete as of yet seeing as he had just gotten the job.

"Now I can start to make plans because I am sitting here in the office," he said.

He said his office doors are always open for suggestions from community members about different ideas for events and activities.

"People have some good ideas," he said.
