SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - The past met the present at Sir John Franklin high school at the recent 50th anniversary reunion.

Shawna McBride, one of the 150 members of the class of 2008, and NWT Commissioner Tony Whitford, one of about 78 members of the class of 1961, met and had a photo taken together during the celebration.

Whitford came to Sir John Franklin from Fort Smith in 1958 when the school opened. While enrolled in the automotive program he spent three years living in Akaitcho Hall.

"Kids from all over the Territories came," said Whitford. "In the residence there were kids from Aklavik, Hudson's Bay, the Resolute area, Cambridge Bay and Hay River and everywhere in between. They came from all over to attend this school."

He played hockey and curling and was part of the student council as a representative of the residence. Whitford also participated in some of the school's drama presentations. He said Buddy Holly and Doris Day were popular stars during his time at the school, while the Lone Ranger was a popular television show.

"The biggest part of the experience in school was who we met when we were in school and who they are today and where they are today," said Whitford. "No matter where I go in the NWT I meet people and say we were in Akaitcho Hall together."

Ed Jeske, Harold Braden and Wilf Robinson were some of his favorite teachers. He said they brought valuable knowledge about mechanics into their classrooms.

Whitford plans to retire in two years when his term as commissioner is finished.

Class of 2008 Sir John graduate Shawna McBride was also involved in the school's drama program, acting on stage and participating backstage.

She enjoys soccer and lists Peter Curran as her favourite teacher.

"He is really passionate," said McBride. "He is willing to help anybody and everybody no matter how much difficulty they are having. He really knows his stuff."

Will Smith is her favourite actor and Kate Hudson is her favourite actress. Her favourite movie is Across the Universe.

McBride counts events surrounding the Wade Hamer Challenge Cup as her favourite memories from her time at Sir John Franklin.

"It is very exciting," she said. "It's where you see the most school spirit."

McBride plans to study science at Red Deer College and eventually become a veterinarian. She would like to come back to Yellowknife and practise veterinary medicine.
