Nominations closed for the Oct. 27 election last Friday. Only 46 candidates came forward overall, around half of the 82 candidates in the 2004 territorial election. Cambridge Bay MLA Keith Peterson had no challengers, while Tagak Curley is acclaimed for the second time in Rankin Inlet North. No candidates came forward for South Baffin, and a by-election will be set later. Returning offices began accepting applications Sept. 22 from those wishing to run. Incumbents who have declared they will not be running for another term include Hudson Bay MLA Peter Kattuk, South Baffin MLA Olayuk Akesuk and Pangnirtung MLA Peter Kilabuk. Nattilik MLA Leona Aglukkaq stepped down to run in the upcoming election as a federal candidate, while Kugluktuk MLA Joe Allen Evygotailak resigned before an unsuccessful bid for the leadership of Kitikmeot Inuit Association. Iqaluit East MLA Ed Picco ended more than a dozen years in Nunavut politics with his announcement Sept. 22 that he would not be running. In his statement, he said it was a difficult decision but after consultation with his family was moving on to a "new chapter" in their lives. Baker Lake MLA David Simailak will run again, but must deliver a letter to every household in his constituency, apologizing for his misconduct while in office. List of candidates:
