INUVIK - Ingamo Hall is sending six youth to the annual Dreamcatcher conference Oct. 17-19 in Edmonton.

Held since 1993, the conference involves sessions on healthy life choices, educational options, career choices and traditional teachings, as well as dance, singing, drumming, crafts and sports.

Organizers Katherine Ciboci and Frederick Arey have been preparing for the trip south.

Arey, who works at Ingamo Hall as the youth cultural advisor, was hired in June to spearhead the fundraising initiative and plan for the trip. He said he hopes the youth get as much from the trip as possible.

"They'll be attending workshops on leadership development."

Ciboci said the six youth chosen for the trip have been active in the Ingamo Hall youth programs.

The group arrives in Edmonton on Oct. 15.

Ciboci said the group will spend a day at West Edmonton Mall before the conference starts on Friday.

Ciboci said she hopes the youth will be able to get to the space and science centre for Saturday night.

"We have two college visits and a tour of the University of Alberta on Monday," she said.

Their last full day in Edmonton will be Tuesday, when the youth will get another chance to do some shopping.

Ciboci said the planning for the conference trip was shared by the staff and board members of Ingamo Hall, which helped finance the trip.

Arey said they received donations from the community as well.

"We got $3,000 from the Ladies' Auxiliary," he said.

Ciboci said the participating youth have been working hard at making the trip a reality as well.

In the past months, they have been hosting pancake breakfasts on Sunday morning from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Arey said the youth will participate in public speaking seminars to prepare them before the trip.

"We want them to participate as much as possible," he said.

Ciboci said she would also like to see the Ingamo Hall youth committee start up again.

"We don't have a committee right now because there aren't any youth that signed up for it," she said.

Arey said the low numbers are due to people moving from town.

"We'd like to get that going too," he said.
