SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - A 29-year-old woman died in a roll-over car accident on Saturday night near kilometre 252 on Highway 3.

The woman, who was a passenger, was found unconscious and without a pulse by members of the Behchoko RCMP detachment at about 8 p.m. She was given CPR by police until medical assistance arrived, but was pronounced dead at the scene.

The condition of the male driver, 36, who was taken to Stanton Territorial Hospital for treatment after being extracted from his vehicle, was unknown at press time.

The vehicle, a white 1999 Sunfire, was found about 100 metres off the highway in the west ditch. Examination of the scene indicated the car was travelling northbound toward Yellowknife when it went out of control, crossed the highway, entered the ditch and rolled.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Francis Cullen said police are investigating whether charges will be laid against the driver.

"Investigations are ongoing, if reasonable and probable grounds are established then of course we will go with charges," he said.

"There's a lot of information that still has to be gathered," he said, adding the driver's condition - in other words if the driver lives - will also be a factor in determining if charges will be laid.

Identities of both victims have not yet been released.
