Derby champion Kurt Wainman donated $2,000 of his winnings to the curling program as well. First vice president of the junior curling program Nick Saturnino said the donation will help with supplies and equipment for the upcoming season.

"This is great. It will help a lot for our equipment and other needs," he said.

Saturnino said that the spending of the money will be decided once the committee for the program meets again.

"That's when we'll decide what to spend the money on," he said.

The start of the junior curling program is Oct. 1.

Saturnino said he plans on meeting with the committee this month to prepare. He added the program is looking for participants in this year's season.

"Joining is free. There is no charge," he said.

"We will be at the community registration night on Sept. 22."

Students in Grades 4 to 12 are qualified to take part in the program.

Saturnino thanked the derby team for their contribution to the curling program. "A big thanks to the derby crew for their generous donation," he said. "We'll put the money to good use."

2008 Derby winner and committee member Kurt Wainman added to the pot with most of his winnings as well, totalling $2,000.

Wainman explained he won $3,000 from the event and gave $1,000 of it to his pit crew, who kept him in the derby.

After four heats of action, Wainman found himself behind the wheel of the only capable car in the action.

After the first heat, Wainman needed to do some cutting with a welding torch to cut loose the back of his trunk.

"I was trying to stay mobile," he said with a laugh. "It took some work but I did it."

There were 14 cars in the final heat.

Wainman said the donation to the club was made because organizers wanted to give back to a worthy cause.

"We're doing this for fun. It seemed like a fitting choice for the money," he said of the donation.

"We donate to the youth whenever we can."
