INUVIK - Buy a ticket and you could win a newly-built shed and help the students of Aurora College at the same time.

Student council at the Inuvik campus is hosting a raffle this month for two sheds built by the introductory carpentry program this summer.

Aurora College student council is holding a raffle this month to raise funds for their student emergency fund. Two sheds that were made by the carpentry program are being raffled in a draw on Sept. 19 at 4 p.m. - Dez Loreen/NNSL photo

Council member Janelle Frost said the carpentry class did a wonderful job working on the sheds.

"They worked in pairs to build one shed each," she said.

Four sheds were made and two are being put up for the draw. The size of the sheds are 10 feet by 12 feet.

One shed was donated to the Great Northern Arts Festival and the other three are property of the college. The program ended on Aug. 8.

Money taken in from the raffle will be used for the student council and the student emergency fund.

"Half of the money raised will go to the student emergency fund," said Frost.

Student services supervisor Robbie Joe said the emergency fund is used to aid those students who need help making ends meet.

Joe added she spent some of her own time over the weekend at NorthMart selling the tickets.

"I sold 19 books in an hour and a half," she said.

"I might go back next weekend to do it again."

The buzz around town has already brought people to the college.

"People have been calling, coming by for tickets," said Joe.

Frost said the high popularity of the raffle is most likely due to the prize and the cheap cost of entering.

"The tickets are cheap and everyone wants a shed," said Frost.

The sheds are built on skids for easier transportation. Joe said the sheds are currently locked up but can be viewed from the outside.

Frost added the wooden structures have not been treated with wood varnish.

"It is up to the winner to have the sheds finished," she said.

Frost said she hopes for the community to step up and help the students of the college and have a chance to win a draw as well.

"Buy, buy, buy," she said. "Show your support for the students of Inuvik."

Tickets are on sale for $2 each. Some 4,000 tickets were printed for the draw, which takes place at Aurora College on Sept. 19 at 4 p.m.
