SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - With the federal election call sounded this past Sunday candidates are off and running, taking their messages out to the masses.

Candidates are hitting the road early. Conservative candidate Brendan Bell and NDP incumbent Dennis Bevington are in Hay River for two days to attend the Start Your Engines transportation conference.

Bell also plans to meet with volunteers and open his Hay River election office and do some campaigning while there. He will be back in Yellowknife Thursday and plans to campaign door to door.

"I think most people in the North don't self-identify with any one party but they are looking to support the best candidate," he said.

"It's a more person approach, getting out and talking with people and not as many partisan-heavy events."

Bevington is a panellist at today's Start Your Engines conference and will be back in Yellowknife for his campaign launch tomorrow at the SideDoor youth centre from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Bevington was also in Fort Providence on Tuesday for the Residential School Healing and Reconciliation session put on by the Dene Nation.

The Liberals have yet to officially name their candidate in the Western Arctic riding, however, the party has said that Gabrielle Mackenzie-Scott is currently the only person to file nomination papers and is expected to be the official candidate after Thursday's nomination meeting.

Green Party candidate Sam Gamble plans to spend this week canvassing and finishing up official paperwork required by Elections Canada.

"A big part will be getting out and meeting people and letting them know what the Green Party is all about," Gamble said.

"We hope to make an official announcement on Thursday as well."
