Reading program all over the map

SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - Kids can take a trip this summer with the public library's Read All Over the Map program, which runs until Aug. 21.

"We're using a well-thought-out program where each week features a different theme," said librarian Melissa Legacy. "It is something developed in B.C. that we found called Reading All Over the Map."

There are three groups - children aged three to five meet Wednesdays from 10 to 11 a.m., ages six to nine meet Thursdays from 10 to 11 a.m., and ages nine to 12 meet Thursdays from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Registration is ongoing.

"We usually read first and then do crafts and games after," said Rebecca Mahler, a summer student at the library.

    Weekly themes offer related books.

"They can follow the books in the theme, but they don't have to," said Mahler. "We just want to encourage reading."

Kids love the thematic approach, she said.

"We learn new things and learn about different books," said Anne Marie Senhouse, a participant in the program.

"They enjoyed the raven theme the first week a bit more than the railroad theme we covered in the second week," added Mahler.

Kids can make reading goals and track their progress with help from their librarian.

"Everyone gets a reading log where they keep track of the books they have read," said Mahler.

"They set up a reading goal for each week and receive stickers for each book they finish."

A grand prize draw takes place in September.

"We moved the date of the draw so nobody would miss it if they were on vacation," said Legacy.
