SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - Staff at Adam Dental Clinic were greeted Tuesday morning by flowers from their prize-winning garden strewn across the pavement.

She had helped plant the garden this year, which won the commercial division of the city's 2008 Lawn & Landscaping Competition.

Jacqueline Cupples, who was one of three judges for the competition this year, shared the sentiment, saying "That's absolutely terrible."

"For a downtown business to put that much effort into presentation of their property, of course it's very upsetting to see something like that."

Sansom said the clinic does have video surveillance and is currently reviewing tapes from Tuesday morning, after which it will decide how to proceed. Clinic staff believe the act occurred between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m.

"They did a nasty job," said Sansom. She said, while unwelcome, the vandalism wasn't particularly surprising. "It happens every year."

"I don't blame store fronts and stuff for not even trying to do anything because the vandalism (downtown) is ridiculous," she said.

But, not everybody has ill-wishes for the clinic's gardens - indeed quite the opposite, Sansom said.

"(The vandals) pulled (them) out by the roots. We found that people were picking them up by the roots and trying to pat them back in for us - which is so nice."
