Suds Cup countdown

The Suds Cup slo-pitch tournament kicks off tonight at Fritz Theil Ballpark, with 11 teams battling to sip from the Cup.

The fun-filled tournament will feature a karaoke contest at the Elks Club on Friday around 9 p.m. Beer gardens will be open all weekend at the ballpark, replete with dance-offs, prizes and raffles.

"We will try to fit a homerun derby in there, and a couple little bat raffles and things like that," said Ali Simpson, the tournament organizer.

The tournament wraps up Sunday afternoon.

Take a kid to the course

As part of the national Take a Kid to the Course week, the Yellowknife Golf Course will be letting kids play for free next week.

"From July 7 to 13, any kid under 16, accompanied by a paying adult, will get to play for free," said Jody Archibald, pro shop attendant at the course.

The national program, which the Yellowknife Golf Course is partnering with, is designed to get more kids out playing the game, said Archibald.

Hockey players may have new floor

Yellowknife floor hockey enthusiasts have had the Mildred Hall Elementary School's upstairs gym as their home court for the past few months, but with the school year coming to a close, they are now looking for a floor to play hockey on.

Allan Gofenko, who has headed up the league, said the group may have found a solution.

"It looks like we should be able to get the Multiplex gym next week," he said. "I have yet to confirm that with them."

The floor hockey shinny group gets together every Tuesday from 8 to 10 p.m. and Gofenko said drop-ins are always welcome.

Beach volleyball workshops

Two former Alberta provincial beach volleyball coaches are flying up to the city to put on a couple of workshops this weekend.

Yk Beach Volleyball will be hosting Brad Poplawski and Tyler Myroniuk, who will be running an adult beach clinic tomorrow and a kids' clinic on Sunday at Fred Henne Park.

"The clinics are intended to help players of all skill levels hone their skills and accomplish a better understanding of positioning and game techniques," said Becca Kroeger, president of the association.

An adult beginner clinic begins at 11 a.m. tomorrow, while the advanced clinic starts at 2 p.m. The youth workshop on Sunday begins at 1 p.m.

The NWT Volleyball Association has funded the workshop.
