LIIDLII KUE/FORT SIMPSON - A small but enthusiastic crowd put feet to pavement for the second fun run of the summer in Fort Simpson.

Eight village residents laced up their running shoes and headed out on the road for the Deh Cho Drum Fun Run on July 20. Following the format of the first event, which was held in June, each participant had the option of walking, running or biking three, five or 10 kilometres along a course from the Recreation Centre, down the main street and up the hill leading out of the village.

With everyone on foot, five km proved to be the popular distance. Setting the lead pace Dan Deschamps, the village's recreation director, was the only person to challenge the full 10 kilometres.

For everyone who comes out the fun runs are just a good way to start the day, said Deschamps. Being active during the event is a way to invest in our bodies today so that we can enjoy a longer, healthier future, he said.

Diane Harold, who walked the five-kilometre distance from the Recreation Centre to Rowe's Construction and back in less than an hour, said the event is a good way to be active. Harold said the fun run fits into her current exercise routine and that it's always nice to have friends to walk with.

"I really enjoy being part of this," she said.

Although there aren't any prizes for the fastest time, each participant is encouraged to write down their time so they can compare their progress between events.

Darlene Sibbeston was please to find she'd cut eight minutes off her first fun run time; she combined running and walking for her five km distance.

The fun runs are a good way to get active and stay active, she said. Sibbeston added she enjoys getting out to exercise with other people.

"Each time it brings out different people," said Sibbeston.

The recreation department organized the event and Deh Cho Drum sponsored the drinks, fruit and participation prizes. The next fun run is scheduled to take place on Aug. 24.
