Good Samaritan stabbed Cara Loverock Northern News Services Published Wednesday, July 23, 2008
He said he received the wound after intervening in an argument between a man and woman on the street. According to RCMP Const. Roxanne Dreilich, the man did not immediately notify police that he had been stabbed. "He was of course very agitated about the whole thing," Dreilich said of the man's demeanor. She said the extent of his injuries is not known but he was taken to hospital. The man said he had been walking down Franklin Avenue and observed a couple, unknown to him, involved in an argument. When he asked the woman if she needed assistance, he said the other man confronted him and the two men became embroiled in a physical altercation. "There was a verbal exchange initially and then a bit of a physical tussle and then they split apart. The victim carried on his way and the other guy followed him and they got into another physical altercation," said Dreilich. "During the course of that, at some point the victim said he saw that the other guy had a knife, but he didn't realize he had been stabbed even at that point. It was after he was walking away, he looked down and realized what had happened." She said the accused, a 46-year-old Yellowknife resident, went to the RCMP detachment later Friday and said he had been assaulted. When he gave the details of the event, police realized he was describing the same altercation and he was arrested. He is facing a charge of assault with a weapon and will appear in court on July 21. Dreilich said RCMP want citizens to be responsible but they also need to be cautious when intervening in instances of assault or other possibly dangerous situations. "Caution is always the best bet," she said. "Just calling the RCMP and keeping an eye on the situation and providing a full description of the people involved. That type of thing can be as helpful as intervening in a situation."
