SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - On Sunday a crowd of about 30 onlookers and family members gathered at Max Ward Dock to watch Shane Weaver get his head shaved.

He raised money for cancer research in an event known as Locks for Love.

This is the third year that the 13-year-old, Grade 8 student from Range Lake School has cut his hair for a cause.

"I started doing this when I was 10 years old," said Weaver.

"I could never find a hairdresser who cut my hair the way I liked it, so I let it keep growing."

The crowd took photos and recorded the event on video.

"Other people were shaving their heads for cancer so I thought I would do the same," said Weaver.

He has raised $949 through his efforts this year.

"We put elastics around the hair so we don't lose any during the shaving," said Esther Weaver.

Weaver and Doreen Murray prepped Shane and shaved his head with clippers.

"He gets it cut once a year," said Ken Weaver.

"We're very proud of him. It is such a good cause."

The transformation took about 30 minutes and the teenager had a whole new look.

"It is itchy in certain parts, but I feel a nice breeze now," said Shane when the cut was complete.
