SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - Several Yellowknife artists are flying to Inuvik this week to share their work at the 20th Annual Great Northern Arts Festival in Inuvik.

The artists represent a variety of traditions and work with diverse styles and media.

They look forward to demonstrating their techniques, meeting other artists from around the North, participating in skill-building workshops and presenting workshops of their own.

Diane Boudreau plans to display a selection of recent paintings during her third visit to the festival. Always one to inspire others with her artistic endeavour, Boudreau is also co-ordinating a mural project to celebrate Inuvik's 50th anniversary.

The centre of the four-by-eight-foot plywood canvass will feature a colourful map of the Mackenzie Delta. Children attending the festival will be invited to decorate the frame of Boudreau's map using outdoor acrylics and their own imaginations.

"We will talk about what they think about Inuvik and how they would represent the town," Boudreau said. "The kids will decide what to draw. With kids, you never know. They have good ideas and they go with the flow."

The mural will be installed in the community following the festival.

Check out the rest of this week's arts section for more profiles of local artists who will contribute to the festival experience.
