NUNAVUT - A Kimmirut man charged in relation to a recent standoff pleaded not guilty in court last week.

Bobby Barrieau, 40, is charged with weapons trafficking, pointing a firearm and two counts of careless use of a firearm.

The matter has been moved to July 8, when trial dates will be formalized.

Barrieau's defence has requested that the trial be held in Kimmirut on the next Kimmirut circuit court date.

Preliminary hearing set for murder charges

The preliminary inquiry for a man charged with three counts of first degree murder stemming from a shooting incident in Cambridge Bay in January 2007 has been set for the weeks of Nov. 10 and 17.

In addition to the murder charges, Chris Bishop, 22, also faces two counts of attempted murder.

The preliminary inquiry will be held in Iqaluit.

Man pleads guilty to sexual interference

Salamonie Aningmiuq was sentenced to 17 months in jail on June 3 after pleading guilty to charges related to an incident in Cape Dorset in May.

The charges included sexual interference, use of a firearm while committing another offence, break and enter, breach of undertaking, and careless use of a firearm.

Aningmiuq had brandished a shotgun in a residence and when confronted by police, fled on snowmobile, and later turned himself in.

He received one month pre-trial custody credit, and will be placed on probation for two years upon release.
