Truck plunges into gorge

ENTERPRISE - A transport truck plunged over the edge of the Hay River gorge at Enterprise on May 30.

The tractor-trailer heading to Edmonton from Yellowknife missed a turn on Highway 1, at the turnoff to Hay River.

The truck ended up on its left side, nose first, down the side of the gorge. It was roughly 30 metres down at the furthest point.

The accident occurred at about 12:30 a.m.

No one, besides the driver, knew it had happened until hours later.

Hay River RCMP Const. Murray Gordon said the driver was spotted at about 6 a.m.

"He apparently climbed out and someone found him walking down the road," Gordon said.

The Edmonton-based driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Carter Industries worked into Friday evening to pull out the vehicle, owned by a private Yellowknife trucker. During the effort, the trailer ripped apart, apparently from the weight of the tractor.

The accident was captured by a security camera at Twin Falls Inn.

The truck, obviously going faster than the 50 kph speed limit, bounces twice as it goes off the road and into a ditch. Its plunge over the edge is obscured by trees.
