Skate sharpening not a problem - Overlander

YELLOWKNIFE - As Overlander Sports celebrates its 25th anniversary this week, the owner says the store won't have any trouble keeping up with winter skate sharpening demands now that its competition has closed shop.

Sandra Stirling, who co-owns the store with Bill Stirling, said Overlander has never had a waiting list for skate sharpening and has three employees running two sharpening machines during the winter, including one full-time technician.

"We sharpen people's skates the same day they come in," she said. "We've been doing it for 25 years."

Stirling said the store is planning a staff party for this Saturday and will invite all of its present and past employees who are still in Yellowknife - a list of nearly 40 people.

Since the store first opened 25 years ago, it's grown from 2,000-square-feet of retail space to about 10,000-square-feet and has moved to three different locations.

"Our sales have grown exponentially," Stirling said. "A lot of our customers are definitely regular customers. We've become friends with a lot of them."
